The Trail Boss

Once on the trail, the trail boss took over. He stayed close to the herd while making sure the trail was clear of obstacles and dangers. Point riders rode directly in front of the herd to guide it. They also set the herd’s pace. Swing riders and flank riders protected the sides of the herd. Drag riders followed the herd, chasing after strays that ran loose and guiding them back to the group. No one wanted to be a drag rider because they ate all the dust.

The cook was often a person too old to ride a horse every day but who still wanted to go on the long drive. The cook drove the chuck wagon, which held all the food as well as bedrolls and supplies. A cowboy’s favorite words were “Come an’ git it!” because it meant the food was ready. After eating the same meat and beans for a month, though, the cowboy no longer considered the cook his best friend.
